But my reasoning to pick for Civ6 is as follows. Civ5 is a fine game and if you decide to go that route (its fairly inexpensive with all expansions included) it's fine. So with the context in mind, you may get some conflicting advice here and elsewhere and that's fine, but I wanted to give you where those advice are coming from. Some people still refuse to play hex based Civ games (hexes were introduced in Civ5) or complain about lack of unit stacking (only 1 unit of each type - combat/support/leader) can be on the tile at once. So when Civ5 launched and upended a lot of Civ conventions, it was trolled very harshly for years, i mean very toxic/mean spirited posts. For years after Civ4, being the first Civ game under 2K label which was fairly acessible and one that finally had the right marketing push by 2K (as opposed to Atari/Infogrames) it becamea lot of people's favorite/first Civ. Everyone have their favorite (rose tintend) version (mine was CivIII) I can write an essay about that game and how it helped me get through losing my dad unexpectedly, but anyways, people can get quite defensive if their version isn't picked as the best. I'll preface this was some truths about Civ fandom. There's almost never any mandatory toggles, screens and switches that some strategy games forces you to sit through. These are things that happen in real life to leaders and decision makers, and they happen in the game because you can spend as much time or as little time as you want per turn. Like you can be so tunnel vissioned hitting 'next turn' to finish building that wonder that is going to give you a big boost, you missed the ships massing near your borders before war is declared, or you make a bunch of unforced errors in your rush to get to the next turn. On their own, its combat, diplomacy, and civics/tech system aren't the best on their own, but they all work together.Īnd there's a lot of real life lessons you can learn playing Civ.
What Civ has been able to do so well since the first one is integrating various systems into its gameplay but keeping those relatively simple. Been playing since Civ2 around 1995ish when I got my first PC.Ī lot of strategy games miss the fact that complexity/realism doesn't always mean better.
